Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry
The place is Atlanta, Georgia in the years 1948-73. Having just totaled her latest car, Daisy Werthan, a rich, sharp-tongued Jewish widow of 72, is informed by her son, Boolie, that he is hiring a chauffeur for her. Hoke is a thoughtful, unemployed black man. There is initially a standoff between the two. Miss Daisy, resenting the loss of her independence, disdains Hoke’s services; he, refusing to be patronized or dismissed, stands his ground. Slowly and steadily, the dignified, good-natured Hoke breaks down Miss Daisy’s defenses; she teaches him to read and write. Over a period of 25 years the two discover their common humanity and a deep affection that the times and circumstances can never allow them to express publicly.
