On First Friday, September 3rd the Mariposa Museum will open its exhibition “Southeast Asia” representing the vibrant cultures of Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. The exhibition, continuing through December, will include dance and music traditions of Southeast Asia, presentations on the culture and history of the region complementing the exhibits of artifacts – textiles, puppets, toys, ceremonial objects and implements of daily living.

September highlights a day of celebrations and offerings from Bali and Chi Potter also returns with her students of Vietnamese dance. The month of October will focus especially on Cambodia, with photographs, film and a program on the Cambodian dance by Eleanor Briggs, George Chigas and Julie Mallozi. October ends with the return of Angkor Dance Troupe, including some of Peterborough’s own young performers at the Peterborough Townhouse. Two Filipino performing groups from the Boston area will appear in November; Dance Philippines, and the Iskwelahang Pilipino Rondalla Ensemble (a rondalla is an ensemble of mandolin or "bandurria" and guitar). “Southeast Asia” includes other performances and programs as well as a Fall Senior Series, Director’s tours and a Fashion Show.

Opening night will feature a gallery exhibit of Indonesian Textiles and reception featuring Southeast Asian cuisine from 6-7pm. At 7pm poet and storyteller Sebastian Lockwood will perform “The Monkey King.”

Sebastian Lockwood works as a traveling bard, teacher and writer. His earliest studies involved non-literate peoples and storytelling – studying Homer and Haida at the same time---at Boston University it was Anthroplogy, Classics and Literature – and at Cambridge University, on the banks of the River Cam, it was an MA in Education, and an MA in Anthropology, again studying story. Currently, when not being Caesar or Odysseus, Lockwood teaches Storytelling and Anthropology at The New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire and occasionally in the Art & Creativity programs for Lesley University and Endicott College.

On First Friday from 5-6pm the KidCraft: Jumping Jack Puppets

All events on First Friday 5-9pm are free (donations appreciated).  The Mariposa is wheelchair accessible.
